The story begins with William Paine, who started manufacturing cable-knit sweaters after recovering a knitting machine from a warehouse. His business quickly grew. The initial models, originally simple, began to adopt different colors and appealed to an increasingly wide clientele.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the Paine house benefited from particularly prestigious support: the Prince of Wales, future Edward VIII, appreciated the brand's clothing and helped strengthen its reputation among the British aristocracy.

In 1940, the company contributed to the war effort, notably manufacturing sweaters for the British army. The house then experienced significant growth, with several hundred employees distributed between Godalming, England, and Wales.

In the 1950s, Alan Paine, William's son, took over the reins of the company. The brand gradually adopted the name Alan Paine, partly because the name "Godalming" was considered difficult for American customers to pronounce.

Alan Paine and the Revival of English Country Style

Over the decades, the company changed ownership several times before being acquired in 2006 by James Hinton, a former sales representative of the house who had joined Alan Paine in 1986. His journey perfectly illustrates the continuity and transmission of savoir-faire within this British house.
