Its origins and name come from Fair Isle, one of the most remote Shetland Islands. Some suggest that this knitting method originated from a practical desire to use up leftover yarn from other projects, rather than discarding it. In this sense, Fair Isle knitting could be seen as an early form of recycling, or even a precursor to modern sustainable practices. Fair Isle sweaters became iconic in 1921, when the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII, made a public appearance wearing one, sparking a true fashion phenomenon.
