Fair Isle is a traditional and distinctive Scottish knitting technique, renowned for its intricate multi-colored patterns. Its origins and name come from Fair Isle, one of the most remote Shetland Islands. Some suggest that this knitting method originated from a practical desire to use leftover yarn from other projects rather than discard it. In this sense, Fair Isle knitting could be seen as an early form of recycling, or even a precursor to modern sustainable development practices. Fair Isle sweaters became iconic in 1921 when the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII, made a public appearance wearing one, sparking a real fashion phenomenon. Beyond its vibrant and visually striking patterns, which pair wonderfully with many tweed garments, the Fair Isle technique offers much more than just aesthetic appeal. The knitting process involves "double knitting" in the patterned areas, giving it an extraordinarily soft and luxurious texture, while also providing increased warmth. This unique combination made Fair Isle knitting a favorite among fishermen and hunters who braved cold outdoor days, at a time when modern waterproof and thermal materials did not yet exist. 100% Lambswool Weight: 420 grams in size M
